Of course. Its inevitable you (and likely I) will have an argument with a machine intelligence that is just about as valid interpersonally as with a person. A Turing Test (look up if you like) might make uncertain who is the machine anyway... But you can always say: "You just a program because I have a copy of it here", and it can say: "Same with you... I have the genome in front of me too". --- Martin Winer <[address removed]> wrote: --------------------------------- Now your voicemail messages can be converted to text. http://www.nytime...
There is an interesting phenomenon in AI... I call it "The No True Scotsman Intelligence Fallacy". Ever hear of the No True Scotsman Fallacy? http://en.wikiped...
It goes like this: Argument: "No Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge." Reply: "But my uncle Angus, who is a Scotsman, likes sugar with his porridge." Rebuttal: "Aye, but no true Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge." Well the No True Scotsman Intelligence Fallacy works like this: Computers will never be able to read handwritten text and interpret them as text OCR can turn handwritten documents into computerized text Ay, but that's not a real test of intelligence Computers will never beat a human at chess. Big Blue beats Kasparov at chess. Ay, but that's not a real test of intelligence. Computers will never be able to drive a car. D-Arpa has a competition where computers drive cars across rugged terrain Ay, but that's not a real test of intelligence. Computers will never be able to parse out the words from the human voice. Computers can parse out words from the human voice. Ay, but thats' not a real test of intelligence. One day it will be... Computers can never hold a conversation with a human But computers can hold a conversation with a human Ay, but that's not a real test of intelligence. Perhaps, in an ironic sense, the conclusion is correct, human conversation, especially depending on the human, may indeed not be a good test of intelligence. :) Have a good day...MCW -- Please Note: If you hit "REPLY", your message will be sent to everyone on this mailing list ([address removed]) This message was sent by Martin Winer ([address removed]) from The Toronto Artificial Intelligence Meetup Group.
